About the coast of Guerrero

Guerrero has about 500 km of coastline on the Pacific Ocean, from the mouth of the Balsas River, on the border with Michoacán, to the municipality of Cuajinicuilapa, on the border with Oaxaca. The state is divided into seven regions; three of them are on the coast: Costa Grande, Acapulco and Costa Chica. The Costa Grande lies northwest of Acapulco, and the Costa Chica southeast of it, as far as the Oaxaca border. Along the coast there are lagoons formed by barriers across bays, such as Nuxco, Mitla, Coyuca, Tres Palos and Chautengo, and others such as Potosí.

Tourism on the coast is concentrated on the beaches of Acapulco, Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo. The shoreline includes the bays of Acapulco and Zihuatanejo and, offshore, islands such as La Roqueta, southwest of Acapulco Bay, and Ixtapa, northwest of Zihuatanejo. Zihuatanejo has been a Pueblo Mágico since 2023. Several sea turtle nesting beaches, declared reserve zones in 1986, have been sanctuaries since 2002; among them are Playa Piedra de Tlacoyunque, in Tecpan de Galeana, and Playa de Tierra Colorada.
