Playa El Palmar is Ixtapa's main beach: it runs about 4.5 km in front of the Zona Hotelera, where most of the resort's lodging is. Ixtapa is a resort planned by FONATUR starting in 1968 and built on what had been coconut plantations and an estuary. Behind the beach are the hotel zone, restaurants and shopping centers, and a bike path links Ixtapa with Zihuatanejo, about 5 km away.
