About the coast of Campeche

By Equipe editorial GTM Labs · Updated

Campeche's coast lies on the Gulf of Mexico, which borders the state to the west. San Francisco de Campeche stands facing the sea; its hexagonal wall, with bastions and gates, was built between 1686 and 1704 against attacks by pirates and corsairs, and the city has been a World Heritage Site since 1999. North of the capital, the Los Petenes Biosphere Reserve covers a low, flood-prone coastal plain and the marine zone of the Gulf, with petenes (tree islands), mangroves and seagrass beds. Farther north, Isla Arena, in the municipality of Calkiní, is part of the Ría Celestún Biosphere Reserve, with estuaries where flamingo colonies can be seen.

In the southwest, Laguna de Términos has been a Flora and Fauna Protection Area since 1994. The protected area includes Isla del Carmen, home to Ciudad del Carmen, and the lagoon connects to the sea through two inlets, Boca del Carmen and Boca de Puerto Real. Isla Aguada, linked to Isla del Carmen by the Puente de la Unidad bridge, is a fishing village with shallow waters and a Pueblo Mágico. In Champotón, the river of the same name flows into the Gulf at a wide beach at the entrance to the town.
