About the coast of Chiapas

Chiapas has a coastline on the Pacific Ocean, with many sandbars, estuaries and coastal lagoons. Its shore faces the Gulf of Tehuantepec. Behind the coast runs the Llanura Costera del Pacífico, a flat strip parallel to the sea, at the foot of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas. Its bodies of water include the Mar Muerto and the La Joya lagoon.
Puerto Arista, in the municipality of Tonalá, has more than 32 km of open-sea beach, and its beaches are a sea turtle sanctuary. In the same municipality, Boca del Cielo lies by the San Marcos estuary, which runs parallel to the coast through mangroves; it is part of the Ramsar site Sistema Estuarino Boca del Cielo. To the south, in the Soconusco, is Puerto Madero, also called Puerto Chiapas and known during the Porfiriato as San Benito, in the municipality of Tapachula. On this coast, the Reserva de la Biosfera La Encrucijada protects one of the richest, most diverse and most productive mangrove regions in the country.
