About the coast of Tamaulipas

By Equipe editorial GTM Labs · Updated

Tamaulipas borders the Gulf of Mexico to the east, and much of its northern coast is taken up by the Laguna Madre, a shallow, hypersaline body of water separated from the sea by sandbars and islets. The lagoon stretches between the Río Bravo delta and the Soto la Marina River, in the municipalities of Matamoros, San Fernando and Soto la Marina. In 2005 the lagoon and the delta were declared the Área de Protección de Flora y Fauna Laguna Madre y Delta del Río Bravo. In the north, Playa Bagdad, in the municipality of Matamoros, lies a few kilometers from the mouth of the Río Bravo.

La Pesca, in Soto la Marina, sits at the mouth of its namesake river, beside the Laguna Madre, and is a fishing spot on the river, the lagoon and the open sea. Barra del Tordo, beside the Carrizal River, combines beach, mangroves and low forest. The Kemp's ridley sea turtle (tortuga lora), endemic to the Gulf of Mexico, nests almost only in Mexico, on Tamaulipas beaches like Rancho Nuevo, Barra del Tordo, Miramar and La Pesca; the Santuario Playa Rancho Nuevo is its main nesting area in the world. In the southeast, Playa Miramar lies in Ciudad Madero, within the Tampico metropolitan area.
