About the coast of Veracruz

By Equipe editorial GTM Labs · Updated

Veracruz faces the Gulf of Mexico and borders Tamaulipas to the north, at the Pánuco River, and Tabasco to the southeast. In the north, between the Pánuco and Tuxpan rivers, lies the Tamiahua lagoon, one of the largest in the country. Off the coasts of Tamiahua and Tuxpan, the Sistema Arrecifal Lobos-Tuxpan was declared an Área de Protección de Flora y Fauna in 2009. Farther south, in the municipality of Tecolutla, the Costa Esmeralda runs from Casitas to La Guadalupe, with estuaries, marshes and the Casitas inlet at the mouth of the Bobos River.

The city and port of Veracruz lies in the central part of the state. Hernán Cortés founded the Villa Rica de la Vera Cruz in 1519, at a site different from the present port. Off the coasts of Veracruz, Boca del Río and Alvarado lies the Parque Nacional Sistema Arrecifal Veracruzano, decreed in 1992, with reefs, cays and islands. In the south, the Reserva de la Biosfera Los Tuxtlas, decreed in 1998, links the coast with the rainforest and cloud forest that climb to the summits of the volcanoes.

Frequently asked questions about beaches in Veracruz

Which beaches in Veracruz does Playas Hoy follow?

Playas Hoy follows 31 beaches in Veracruz, including Playa Antón Lizardo, Playa Balzapote, Playa Gaviota, Playa José Martí, and Playa La Bamba. They are all in the list on this page.

How do I know if I can swim today at the beaches in Veracruz?

Each beach has its own assessment for today, built from the data for its location, each with its source: the weather for the current hour (sky, rain, wind and temperature), modelled waves, SMN warnings, NHC cyclones, satellite lightning detection, tsunami alerts, and the latest COFEPRIS monitoring. Pick a beach from the list to see it. Playas Hoy cannot see flags, currents or lifeguards: at the beach, follow the flag and the lifeguard's instructions.
