About the coast of Michoacán
By Equipe editorial GTM Labs · Updated
Michoacán's coast faces the Pacific Ocean between Boca de Apiza, where the Coahuayana River meets the sea at the boundary with Colima, and the Balsas River delta, at the boundary with Guerrero. The Sierra Madre del Sur reaches the sea and forms cliffs between the beaches. In Aquila, the Nahua communities of Pómaro, Ostula and Coire reach the ocean; this is the so-called costa nahua, with villages such as Maruata, Colola and Faro de Bucerías. Nexpa and La Ticla are beaches sought out by surfers.
In Aquila, Playa Colola, Playa Maruata and Playa Mexiquillo are protected natural areas in the sanctuary category for sea turtle nesting. Between Playa Azul and the city of Lázaro Cárdenas, the El Caimán coastal lagoon, lined with mangroves, runs parallel to the coast and is a Ramsar site. On the Balsas delta, next to the boundary with Guerrero, are the city and port of Lázaro Cárdenas.
