About the coast of Tabasco
By Equipe editorial GTM Labs · Updated
Tabasco borders the Gulf of Mexico to the north, where it has 191 km of coastline between the mouths of the Tonalá and San Pedro rivers. In the municipality of Cárdenas, the El Carmen, Pajonal and Machona lagoons form a lagoon system separated from the gulf by a sandbar. Beside it lies the port of Sánchez Magallanes, and the lagoons support fishing and oyster farming. The municipality of Paraíso has the Mecoacán lagoon and the port of Dos Bocas.
In Centla the Grijalva River reaches the sea; together with the Usumacinta it forms a broad delta of lowlands and wetlands: the Pantanos de Centla. Decreed a Reserva de la Biosfera on 6 August 1992, they cover parts of the municipalities of Centla, Jonuta and Macuspana and hold the largest wetlands in Mesoamerica. Frontera, the seat of Centla, is the port beside the mouth of the Grijalva.
