About the coast of Yucatán

By Equipe editorial GTM Labs · Updated

Yucatán borders the Gulf of Mexico to the north and, in part, to the west. The state government calls its shoreline the Costa Yucateca and describes it as running from Celestún to El Cuyo, with mangroves, estuaries, coastal lagoons and wetlands. In the west, Celestún is part of the Ría Celestún Biosphere Reserve, which continues into Campeche and where the pink flamingo nests. In the east, Río Lagartos lies within the Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve, where flamingos, pelicans and herons can be seen. The ría is an estuary separated from the sea by a barrier island, with basins at Río Lagartos, Las Coloradas and El Cuyo.

Progreso is the state's main commercial and cruise port, and nearby are Chuburná, Chelem and Chicxulub, the last tied to the meteorite impact of 66 million years ago. Sisal, a fishing port that was the port of entry for goods in colonial times, is a Pueblo Mágico and keeps the Fuerte de Santiago, the lighthouse and the old Maritime Customs House. Telchac Puerto has the pink Xtampú lagoon and the Xcambó archaeological site. In Las Coloradas, the pink waters lie in a private salt-production area.
