About the coast of Baja California Sur

By Equipe editorial GTM Labs · Updated

Baja California Sur covers the southern part of the peninsula, between the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Gulf of California, or Sea of Cortés, to the east; the two meet at its tip, at Cabo San Lucas. On the Pacific, the Ojo de Liebre and San Ignacio lagoons, breeding grounds of the gray whale, make up the El Vizcaíno Whale Sanctuary, a World Heritage Site since 1993. Both are part of the El Vizcaíno Biosphere Reserve, decreed in 1988. Farther south, Bahía Magdalena, home to Puerto San Carlos and Puerto Adolfo López Mateos, is another gray whale breeding site and has extensive mangroves.

On the gulf, the coast forms bays such as Loreto and La Paz, with islands offshore. The gulf islands are a Flora and Fauna Protection Area and, since 2005, part of the Islands and Protected Areas of the Gulf of California World Heritage Site. The coast also includes Bahía de Loreto National Park (1996), Zona Marina del Archipiélago de Espíritu Santo National Park (2007), the Balandra Flora and Fauna Protection Area (2012), Cabo Pulmo National Park, with a coral reef, and the Cabo San Lucas Flora and Fauna Protection Area (1973).
