Jalisco beaches: which one is worth it today?

Jalisco's coast, on the Pacific Ocean, begins in the north at Bahía de Banderas, which the state shares with Nayarit; the bay runs from Punta Mita to Cabo Corrientes, and the Ameca River marks the boundary between the two states. Puerto Vallarta lies on the Jalisco shore of the bay. South of the city, along the coast, lies Yelapa, which is reached by sea. The bay is a breeding and calving ground for humpback whales.

Farther south lies the Costalegre, with Bahía de Chamela and places such as Tenacatita and Barra de Navidad. La Huerta is home to the Reserva de la Biosfera Chamela-Cuixmala, created in 1993, with tropical dry forest. Four beaches on this coast are protected natural areas in the sanctuary category for sea turtle nesting: Playa Mismaloya, across Cabo Corrientes, Tomatlán and La Huerta, not to be confused with Mismaloya in Puerto Vallarta, and Playa Teopa, Playa Cuitzmala and Playa El Tecuán, in La Huerta. In 1564, Miguel López de Legazpi's expedition to the Philippines set sail from Barra de Navidad, in Cihuatlán.
