About Playa Las Gatas

By Equipe editorial GTM Labs · Updated

Playa Las Gatas lies across Zihuatanejo Bay, near its entrance, and is reached mainly by boat from Zihuatanejo's main pier. Offshore there is a reef and a stone barrier that, according to legend, a Purépecha lord had built to hold back the waves and create a kind of natural pool; the reef makes it a well-known snorkeling spot. Its name comes from the small, harmless nurse sharks (tiburones gata) that once lived in these waters. Behind the barrier the water is usually calmer than at open-ocean beaches. Seafood restaurants line the shore.
