About the coast of Baja California

By Equipe editorial GTM Labs · Updated

Baja California covers the northern part of the peninsula and has two coastlines: the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Gulf of California to the east. On the Pacific, the coast runs south from the U.S. border through Tijuana, Rosarito and Ensenada. The beaches of Rosarito are sandy, long and gently sloping, with moderate to strong surf. Off this coast lie the Coronado, Todos Santos, Cedros and Guadalupe islands. Isla Guadalupe has been a Biosphere Reserve since 2005, and Coronado, Todos Santos and Cedros are part of the Islas del Pacífico de la Península de Baja California Biosphere Reserve, decreed in 2016.

On the gulf side, the coast begins at the Colorado River delta. In this upper part of the gulf the tidal range is large. San Felipe is a fishing and tourist port on this coast. The Alto Golfo de California y Delta del Río Colorado Biosphere Reserve, decreed in 1993 and shared with Sonora, protects the delta and its waters. Farther south, the Bahía de los Ángeles, Canales de Ballenas y de Salsipuedes Biosphere Reserve, from 2007, covers a stretch of the peninsula's eastern coast. The gulf islands are part of the Islas del Golfo de California Flora and Fauna Protection Area.
