About the coast of Sonora

By Equipe editorial GTM Labs · Updated

Sonora's coast lies on the Gulf of California, or Sea of Cortés. In the north, the Colorado River delta reaches the Upper Gulf of California at the border with Baja California; the town of Golfo de Santa Clara lies on that coast. Puerto Peñasco lies on the Upper Gulf of California. Bahía de Kino faces Tiburón Island, territory of the Comcaac (Seri) people. Farther south are San Carlos, with Cerro Tetakawi, and the port of Guaymas. At the southern end, Huatabampito has beaches with a gentle slope and gentle surf, with dunes.

The Reserva de la Biosfera Alto Golfo de California y Delta del Río Colorado, decreed on June 10, 1993, covers about 934,000 hectares between Sonora and Baja California and reaches Puerto Peñasco along the coast. Sonora's islands in the gulf, among them Tiburón and those of San Jorge Bay, are part of the Área de Protección de Flora y Fauna Islas del Golfo de California. These islands and protected areas of the gulf have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005. Near San Carlos, Estero El Soldado is a coastal lagoon with mangroves, a state ecological conservation zone and a Ramsar site.
