Playa Montepío is on the Los Tuxtlas coast, in the municipality of San Andrés Tuxtla, about 39 km from Catemaco by the coastal road. The village sits at the mouth of the Col and Máquina rivers, which reach the sea next to each other; the Col comes down from the San Martín Tuxtla volcano. The beach, with generally calm waves, is flanked by rock walls and cliffs. It is a vacation spot mostly for Mexican visitors, next to Balzapote and Playa Hermosa.
