Playa Antón Lizardo is in the port town of the same name, in the municipality of Alvarado, about 23 km south of the port of Veracruz by road. It is a beach of fine sand with generally calm, shallow water, facing the southern group of reefs of the Parque Nacional Sistema Arrecifal Veracruzano, a marine national park decreed in 1992. Boats leave from here for the park's reefs and islands, such as Isla de Enmedio, and it is a common starting point for scuba diving. Since 1952 Antón Lizardo has been home to the Heroica Escuela Naval Militar, Mexico's naval academy.
