Playa Monte Gordo is in the town of the same name, in the municipality of Tecolutla, on the Costa Esmeralda, the beach corridor of northern Veracruz between Nautla and Tecolutla. It lies beside Federal Highway 180, about 28 km southeast of the municipal seat. It is a beach of fine sand and generally gentle waves open to the Gulf of Mexico, with camping areas. The site already appears around 1610 in the account of De la Mota y Escobar, four leagues from Tecolutla toward Nautla.
