Playa Balzapote is on the Los Tuxtlas coast, in the municipality of San Andrés Tuxtla, next to Montepío. Balzapote is a small fishing community with a minor port and a river of the same name that reaches the sea at the beach, between stretches of rock, and its beach generally has calm waves. It is reached by the coastal road from Catemaco toward Montepío, or from El Trópico on Federal Highway 180. Balzapote lies in the buffer zone of the Reserva de la Biosfera Los Tuxtlas. Scenes of the film Apocalypto (2006) were shot here.
