Playa Barra Norte is in the community of Barra Norte, in the municipality of Tuxpan, next to the mouth of the Tuxpan River, which is channeled by two breakwaters, about 12 km northeast of the city. It is the southern section of the continuous beach, about 42 km long, on the Tuxpan coast. Local guides describe this coast as having calm waves and shallow water, although during the nortes, in the cold-front season, the waves can run high. Off the Tuxpan coast lies the Tuxpan section of the Sistema Arrecifal Lobos-Tuxpan flora and fauna protected area, decreed in 2009.
