About Playa Sisal
By Equipe editorial GTM Labs · Updated
Sisal is a port in the municipality of Hunucmá, on the northwest coast of Yucatán, about 53 kilometers from Mérida. It was Yucatán's main port from the 16th century until the early 20th, when Progreso replaced it, and henequen fiber shipped from here came to be known abroad as “sisal.” The Fuerte de Santiago and an 1845 lighthouse remain from that past. It is a fishing town, a Pueblo Mágico since 2020, surrounded by mangroves.
