Chelem is a fishing port in the municipality of Progreso, on the northern coast of Yucatán, about 9 kilometers west of the port of Progreso and some 45 kilometers from Mérida. The town sits on the strip of sand between the Gulf of Mexico and the Progreso ciénaga (coastal wetland), next to the Yucalpetén harbor, home port of the region's fishing fleet. Its sea is generally calm with a gentle slope, and its beach is one of those where Mérida residents spend the summer; this point is on the western stretch of town.
