Chicxulub Puerto is a coastal town in the municipality of Progreso, on the northern coast of Yucatán, about 8 kilometers east of Progreso and some 42 kilometers north of Mérida. The center of the Chicxulub crater, left by the impact 66 million years ago linked to the extinction of the dinosaurs, lies near here; the crater is buried under rock and cannot be seen at the surface. Its beach, with shallow and generally calm water, has a more residential, family atmosphere than Progreso's. It should not be confused with Chicxulub Pueblo, inland.
