About Playa Progreso
By Equipe editorial GTM Labs · Updated
Progreso is Yucatán's main port, about 35 kilometers north of Mérida, and its city beach runs along the malecón, the seafront promenade, for about a kilometer. From the shore, the deep-water port's pier stretches some 6.5 kilometers out to sea, allowing large ships to dock; Guinness recognized it in 2023 as the world's longest pier. It is a beach with shallow water and generally calm waves. It is the closest one to Mérida and gets very busy in summer. The port was founded by decree in 1856.
