About Playa Río Lagartos

By Equipe editorial GTM Labs · Updated

Río Lagartos is a fishing port and municipal seat on the northern coast of Yucatán, about 165 kilometers east of Progreso, on the shore of the ría (estuary) that gives it its name. The town is on the mainland side; the beach is on the sand bar that separates the ría from the Gulf of Mexico, across from town, and is reached by boat. The area is part of the Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve, Mexico's first wetland on the Ramsar list (1986), known for its flamingos and mangroves; its beaches are sea turtle nesting areas.
