Chelem is a fishing port in the municipality of Progreso, on the northern coast of Yucatán, about 9 kilometers west of the port of Progreso. It sits on the strip of sand between the Gulf of Mexico and the Progreso ciénaga (coastal wetland). This point is on the eastern stretch, toward Yucalpetén, the harbor that serves the region's fishing fleet. Its sea is generally calm with a gentle slope, and its beach is one of those where Mérida residents spend the summer.
