About the coast of Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen lies on the Mexican Caribbean coast, across from the island of Cozumel. It is part of the Riviera Maya, the stretch of coast that runs from Puerto Morelos to Tulum. In pre-Hispanic times there was a small fishing village here called Xamanhá, 'water of the north', which may have been one of the ports of departure for Cozumel. Its remains lie south of the modern city, between the coastal dunes and the forest. The sea off the municipality is part of the Caribe Mexicano Biosphere Reserve, created in 2016.
