About the coast of Cancún

Cancún, in the municipality of Benito Juárez, is on the Caribbean coast of Quintana Roo. The city, the Nichupté lagoon system and the Zona Hotelera make up the zone of influence of the Costa Occidental de Isla Mujeres, Punta Cancún y Punta Nizuc National Park, and the Nichupté lagoon drains into one of its polygons. The park, off the coasts of the municipalities of Isla Mujeres and Benito Juárez, was decreed in 1996 as a marine park and became a national park in 2000. Cancún grew out of an integrated tourism development project that followed the tourism policy the Banco de México adopted in 1968.
