About the coast of Cozumel

Cozumel is an island off Playa del Carmen. It is the largest island in the Mexican Caribbean and is known for its coral reefs. Off the municipality's coasts lies the Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park, decreed in 1996 as a marine park and reclassified as a national park in 2000. The sea off the island is part of the Caribe Mexicano Biosphere Reserve, created in 2016. In pre-Hispanic times, the island held a sanctuary to the goddess Ixchel that drew pilgrims.
