San José del Cabo lies on the Gulf of California coast, facing the Sea of Cortés, near the southern tip of the peninsula. Next to the town, the San José River flows into the San José del Cabo estuary. The estuary is a State Ecological Reserve and a Ramsar site. The mission of San José del Cabo Añuití was founded in 1730. Its beaches are sandy and rocky, with well-known surf spots; among them are Costa Azul and Palmilla. Toward Cabo San Lucas runs the Corredor Turístico, a coastal strip that also includes Palmilla.
