Ciudad del Carmen is on Isla del Carmen, which is part of the Laguna de Términos Flora and Fauna Protection Area, decreed in 1994. The lagoon connects to the sea through two inlets, Boca del Carmen and Boca de Puerto Real. The island is linked to the mainland by bridges; the Puente de la Unidad joins it to Isla Aguada. Playa Norte has about three kilometers of white sand, and Playa Bahamita forms a small bay. In colonial times, Isla del Carmen, formerly called Isla de Tris, was a refuge for pirates.
