Manzanillo stretches across two Pacific bays, Bahía de Manzanillo and Bahía de Santiago. On Bahía de Manzanillo, near downtown, are Las Brisas and San Pedrito, where ships can be seen entering and leaving the port, the country's main container gateway. On Bahía de Santiago are La Audiencia and Santiago, with Miramar and La Boquita nearby. The municipality also includes the Juluapan and San Pedrito lagoons and most of the Laguna de Cuyutlán. In 1522, Captain Gonzalo de Sandoval reached this coast and explored the nearby shores.
