About Playa Cuyutlán

By Equipe editorial GTM Labs · Updated

Open-ocean, black-sand beach with strong waves, in front of the village of Cuyutlán, in the municipality of Armería, between the ocean and the Cuyutlán lagoon, the largest in the state. The dark sand comes from eroded volcanic basalt. It is a fishing village with a salt-making tradition and is popular with surfers. Nearby is the Centro Ecológico de Cuyutlán (turtle sanctuary), which protects sea turtles and releases hatchlings in season. It is linked to the "Ola Verde" (Green Wave), the name given to the greenish or glowing spring waves.
