Tecomán's coast faces the open sea, with many beaches of dark volcanic sand. Boca de Pascuales, at the mouth of the Armería River, is known worldwide for its big, barreling waves, sought out by professional surfers. The El Chupadero estuary keeps its mangroves and is a refuge for birds. The beaches of Boca de Apiza, El Chupadero and El Tecuanillo form a Ramsar site and are the state's main nesting beaches for olive ridley, leatherback and black sea turtles. Along that stretch the shoreline is fairly straight and the surf is medium to high.
