Open-sea beach on the San Marcos sandbar, a strip of sand about 200 m (650 ft) wide separating the Boca del Cielo estuary from the Pacific Ocean, in the municipality of Tonalá. On the ocean side, the waves and undertow are stronger than in the estuary. There is no road: it is reached by boat or dugout canoe from the village docks, half a kilometer away. The sand is fine and gray, and there are seafood palapas on the bar. A turtle camp in the area protects nests and releases hatchlings.
