Shore of the Boca del Cielo estuary, in the municipality of Tonalá, on the Gulf of Tehuantepec coast, about 15 km east of Puerto Arista. The estuary is part of a long lagoon, La Joya, separated from the open sea by a sandbar, where river freshwater mixes with seawater. Its waters are generally calm and shallow, except near the inlet, where it is deeper and has strong currents. Boats and dugout canoes leave the village docks for the San Marcos sandbar, half a kilometer away, where the ocean beach is.
