About Playa Xcacel

By Equipe editorial GTM Labs · Updated

Beach within the Santuario de la Tortuga Marina Xcacel-Xcacelito, a state protected natural area decreed in 1998, off the Cancún-Chetumal highway near Chemuyil, between Akumal and Tulum. It is the state's most important nesting site for loggerhead and green sea turtles, and the beach is kept undeveloped to protect the nests. The sanctuary includes cenotes connected to the sea and, offshore, coral formations and seagrass beds.

At the north end, a reef parallel to the shore, where the waves break some 200 meters out, forms a sheltered area; to the south the beach is more exposed to waves and currents. Entry is by a dirt road with a gatehouse, and the sanctuary has its own rules for visitors.
