About Playa Bagdad

By Equipe editorial GTM Labs · Updated

Gulf of Mexico beach in the municipality of Matamoros, about 30 km east of the city and south of the mouth of the Río Bravo (Rio Grande), near the U.S. border. It is a flat, shallow beach with generally calm waves. Its name, given in 1991, recalls the old port of Bagdad, which stood at the river mouth from the mid-19th century until it was abandoned, and which during the U.S. Civil War was a key outlet for Confederate cotton. In 2014 the city council renamed it Playa Costa Azul, but the change was never ratified and was dropped.
