The town beach of Mahahual, on the Costa Maya in southern Quintana Roo, in the municipality of Othón P. Blanco, near the border with Belize. It runs along a pedestrian malecón of almost two kilometers. The coast is protected by the coral barrier of the Mesoamerican Reef System, which lies a short distance from shore and keeps the nearshore water generally calm. Mahahual was a fishing village, and offshore lies the Banco Chinchorro Biosphere Reserve, Mexico's largest coral atoll.
